TC PVT25 3DTV from Panasonic – First Look Review

The newest round of 3D televisions, like the TC-PVT25 from Panasonic, has been getting a lot of attention this year, starting at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year.  At CES, one of the shining stars was the TCPVT25, which gained kudos from industry experts and Average Joes alike.   Seeing the TCPVT25 in person is what got me looking seriously at upgrading my home theatre to 3D.

Have you been thinking about buy a 3D television?  If so, you may be skeptical of the technology – concerned that it will all change next year and leave you out-dated.   After seeing the Panasonic TCPVT25 I started researching the 3DTV market.  Unbeknownst to me at the time, all of the major TV suppliers have 3DTVs on the market.  First, I started educating myself on the core technology.  I’ve read every review I can get my hands on and I’ve visited the retail stores to fully experience all of the different products and alternatives.

What is obvious when you first look at the Panasonic TC PVT25 is also confirmed by every review of the 3DTV technology – it’s here, it works and it’s stable.  The TCPVT25 has received great reviews and Editor’s Choice awards since it was introduced at CES earlier this year.  CNET (cnet.com) named the Panasonic TC-PVT25 Top Overall TV for 2010.  CNET also singled out the TC PVT25 as the best TV choice for the 2010 holiday season.   CNET, along with a host of other reviewers, cite the exceptional picture quality in both 3D and in 2D and its exceptional black-level performance, which has been a sore spot for Panasonic in the past and something they have clearly overcome with the TC PVT25.

The TCPVT25 uses Frame Sequential Technology, which is fairly standard for the new breed of 3DTVs.   With Frame Sequential Technology, “frames” are sent in sequence, one for the right eye and the next for the left eye.  The television processor synchronizes with the 3D glasses to “shutter” the left eye when the frame for the right eye is being sent and vice versa.  Hence, the Panasonic 3D glasses are called “active-shutter”.

The Panasonic TCPVT25 has some good reviews to its name and is generally rated quite high.  What seems to set it apart from the rest of the pack are the things that matter most:  the outstanding picture quality and excellent black-level performance.  And an important point for every buyer is superior performance in both 3D and 2D.  Although the ultimate experience is in 3D, and yes 3D content is increasing daily, I still want excellent picture quality in 2D.  I imagine I’ll be watching the night news in 2D for some time to come, so I want a TV that is just as brilliant in 2D as it is in 3D.  I was happy to see how well the TCPVT25 performed in this respect and CNET’s review confirmed my own opinion, calling it “the best 2D TV we’ve ever tested” to date.

In my humble opinion, and in the less humble opinion of quite a few other reviewers, the Panasonic TC-PVT25 is an excellent choice because of its exceptional performance in both 3D and 2D, superior black level performance and overall picture quality, all in a brand that you can trust.

The price of theTC-PVT25 50-inch model is about $2000, and oddly enough, only comes with one pair of 3D glasses.  What were they thinking?  Oh, sure, I’m going to spend two grand on the hottest TV on the market and watch alone…umm, sure.   So, build into your budget that each pair of glasses costs $99.00 but if you buy the Panasonic 3D Starter kit, which is $197, you get two pair of glasses, a power on/off switch with auto-off, and two 3D movies…so it’s a little better deal.  And if you wear ordinary corrective lenses like me, don’t fret.  The Panasonic Active-Shutter 3D glasses are designed to fit quite nicely with your regular glasses on.

If you think you’re ready for a 3DTV, the Panasonic TCPVT25 is the way to go.  Check out http://www.TCPVT25.COM for more information, pricing, specifications and to buy from the most trusted source in America.
