I hate to say this, but Darkstar is correct. There are two things in this world where the phrase “you get what you pay for” still applies: automobiles, and televisions. I used to work for a large TV repair facility in my state, and we used to see a lot of Wal-Mart TV’s in our shop.
Also, I’d stay with a major brand (like RCA, Sony, Hitachi or Toshiba). Yes, those major brands are a little more expensive, and the lesser-known brands will play just as well when you buy them; but the real test happens the first time you have to get it repaired. Here’s what I mean:
A major brand manufacturer will likely have authorized service centers in your town; this means that those repair shops will have parts, electronics blueprints, and all the tech support they need from the manufacturer, and your TV may spend (at worst) maybe a couple of weeks in the shop. On the other hand, a lesser brand manufacturer usually doesn’t put a lot into after-purchase support for their products: it’s actually more difficult to get those parts, blueprints and tech support (sometimes nearly impossible), and this could mean your TV will spend MUCH longer in the shop waiting for repairs (in some cases it may not even get successfully repaired at all).
When you buy a major brand, it usually costs a little more because you’re also paying for that support the manufacturer puts behind the TV after you buy it. That support could mean the difference between your TV spending 2-14 days in the shop instead of (potentially) a few months.
