HDMI High-Definition Multimedia Interface

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and represents a compact audio as well as video interface that transmits digital data in a compressed format. The fact that the data is transmitted without compression translates in high quality. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the industry supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as set-top box, DVD player, A/V receiver and audio/video monitors, such as digital television (DTV,HDTV) or plasma Monitor. HDMI is small, user-friendly interconnect that provides up to 5 Gbps of bandwidth to support high-definition video plus multichannel audio in single cable. HDMI eliminates the cost, complexity and confusion of multiple cables used to connect current audio/video system.

The need for this type of interface became a necessity when product s that provided high quality sound or image became popular and affordable to users all over the world. Some issues were solved by new regulations and improvements amendments to HDMI standard, issues like cable length. For the so called Category 1 cables (standard HDMI) the maximum length of 5 meters is considered valid in terms of signal’s quality. This length can be considered limiting for a big room or for devices placed in such way that the cable must surround big pieces of furniture. This issue disappeared once Category 2 cables were developed, allowing users to have a maximum of 15 meters between the connected devices, more than sufficient for any user. Also throughout its specifications and thanks to the high quality materials used, Category 2 cables are considered high-speed and they are more expensive. Anyway a Category 1 cable with a length less than 5 meters can perform as fine as a Category 2 High-speed cable.

Although the grow rate of technology is simply amazing, the mass production of various devices and accessories allow everyone to buy the latest in home entertainment. What would all the entertainment technology provided in stores mean without a quality solution to link the devices? Solved! So never mind staying in line to enter crowded cinemas and never mind being bothered by the ones that forgot they are not the only people looking at the movie, now with a wide screen LCD TV, with a Blue Ray player and a Home Theatre surround sound system you will enjoy in your own home all the movies you like anytime and not bothered by anyone at all. There will be no problems connecting all the devices as HDMI technology, because it transmits the data uncompressed, is independent of various standards. Amazing how a few cables can do so much.
