HDTV TV Tuner Basics
Owning an HDTV TV tuner will be a necessity in the near future as everybody will have one and will be viewing television on an HDTV set. This term stands for High Definition Television, and everyone is talking about this newest format for digital broadcasting. An HDTV tuner has one basic ability: it can pick up packets, (digitally encoded MPEG-2) from cable and free-to-air broadcasts. The HDTV tuner box then receives these packets. The downside is that you totally lose the data if the packets come in out of order. Therefore an HDTV tuner is an “all or nothing” kind of technology that’s fundamentally different from analog. With analog tuners, even faint signals can be received and shown onscreen, however the picture quality will be very poor, producing the famous “snow” effect.
There are two important things to look for in your HDTV tuner: it should be able to get cable QAM and it ought to also allow for utilization with a PC processor.
