Coaxial-to-HDMI converter cable or box?
I have an old VCR. The coaxial cable line goes into it, and then comes out and into the TV. I’m setting up a new receiver (Sony STR-DG820) which doesn’t have a coaxial input. So I’m looking for a way to connect the coaxial cable into the receiver. It must be possible, since the cable company has a box that will do the conversion for high-definition signal.
I’m not interested in a high-def signal to the TV at the moment–just looking for a way to get the basic cable channels I have now through the receiver and into the TV. Thanks.

Forget this converter idea……….just try this….
Leave your VCR and TV connected just like you had it…
Coax into VCR –> Coax out of VCR and into TV. (correct?)
Look at the back of your TV, unless it’s a really old or cheap TV, there should be some RCA audio OUTPUTS (colored red and white).
Connect a pair of RCA cables from those to a correpsonding INPUT pair on the back of your receiver. (use Video 1 for example)
When you power up the receiver, select the input or source to “Video 1″ and you should have audio from your TV.
ALSO : Please, please, please! READ THE MANUAL that comes with you receiver.
Often they diagram multiple ways to connect all sorts of equipment together. Read, learn the proper terminology, and experiment! This isn’t rocket science.
