What’s a good way to record what’s on television?
I have a friend who recently got a hi def television, and she gets her television service from cable. Previously she used a VCR to record her favorite shows. Personally (I don’t have hi def), I’ve used DVRs and been very satisfied. What options does she have (hopefully not too costly)? I know people that have Tivos but I’m guessing they’re generally used by people with satellite setups. Personally I’d recommend to her she get a regular DVR recorder and just watch anything she has recorded in the old format so the expense isn’t too great. Are there DVR recorders that record in high definition, and if so, about how much do they cost, what what might be good place to buy one online? thanks
She can get a TiVo HD or Premiere, which is made for cable and antenna, but exclude satellite. It will cost $500 or so for two years, whatever plan. Otherwise, I would recommend the provider DVD offering, which will be a bit cheaper.
Apart from TiVo HD and building HTPC DVRs, there are no non-provider HD-DVR solutions for other than antenna. For antenna, all there really is, is the Channel Master DTV-PAL, and maybe a couple others.
Otherwise, she would be stuck recording SD.
In my Man Cave, although I have an HDTV (only 32″ though), I DVR in SD, using an old Series 2 with Product Lifetime subscription, watching HD live.
