work better as HTPC
I bought this computer for a htpc after the old laptop i was using stopped working. I was a little hesitant since i bought it with no amazon reviews to read, but I’m glad I did. Works great. I use with a Vizio TV over the monitor cable (the vizio I use has all of the HDMI in use from other things, xbox, bluray, etc) and I use it with an HD Homerun and an Antenna’s Direct antenna. Killer combo. HD sports, for no monthly fee! You can laugh on the inside as your coworkers tell you how much they spend on U-Verse. The graphic card handles HD output (at least over the monitor cable) with no issues. The windows media center menus zoom in and out over the HD TV feed with no smearing or skipping (my old HTPC couldn’t handle this). I recommend having an external HDD plugged in and dragging over recorded show files to free up space if needed, then dragging back to watch later (I do this so I can record ALL of the free over the air HD NFL I can get). The range of the keyboard and mouse is also very good, I would say 15 feet easily – very couch-possible.
Works well but puzzling memory upgrade
Happy but the memory upgrade is puzzling. I wish that one could order the maximum memory with this desktop rather than spending hours with ACER authorized memory online dealers to sort through the contradictory information on the Amazon site and no information on the Acer and dealer sites (2GB 240-pin DIMM DDR2 vs 2GB 240-pin DIMM DDR3). I’ll need to learn more about memory than I wanted to know.
Now to figure out how to open the case to install the 4 GB of memory. It’s been an adventure. Otherwise I am satisfied with the wee one although it looks quite funny with all the cables attached and peripherals that are bigger than the desktop. The desktop will not attach physically to the back of any of my monitors (Samsung and ViewSonic). Which is intended only to television.
