How Important Is Full HD (1080p)?
In recent years we’ve seen a number of changes to how we watch TV in our homes; whether it is watching movies, playing games or just watching television there has been a major change and that has been the introduction of high definition TVs. High definition TVs or HDTVs are able to produce images almost twice as sharp as our old TVs but just as soon as high definition came out hot on it’s heels was something called “Full HD”, this was a bit of a shock and source of frustration for those who had just bought a HD TV only to find out they are already borderline obsolete!
The difference is that HD TVs need to produce images to the resolution of 720p to be classed as ‘HD Ready’, TVs that can produce resolutions of 1080p are the sets referred to as ‘Full HD’ and as their specification states, they have a higher resolution meaning in layman’s terms that the picture is sharper and details are more defined and noticeable, whether it is flecks of dirt on a soldier’s face or the boots of a football player.
So how important is having a Full HD TV? Can we get by with a TV capable of 720p if it means we get to save some money? Well the definitive answer is up to the person who is asking, generally speaking the human eye won’t notice a great deal of difference between 720p and 1080p on a typical 32 inch television, it is always going to look good but it is when you start looking at the larger televisions above 40 inches that this extra level of detail would be appreciated.
Even with a HD source going to your TV whether it is your TV provider, a games console or Blu-Ray player it can still look slightly blurry on the larger TV sets, especially if you are sat fairly close to the TV set. With 1080p capable TVs you’ll be able to get a consistently sharp image no matter where you are sat and whatever size TV you have bought.
Not everyone has moved up to a HD TV provider yet, at the moment the major two subscription services Virgin Media and Sky both have a selection of HD channels and the FreeSat beams a limited number of HD channels for free but still requires a satellite dish. Video game consoles now present games in 720p or there abouts with the Sony Playstation 3 capable of 1080p movies via a Blu-Ray Disc.
If you have any of these and want a larger TV then you may need to bear in mind that you’ll need a TV that is capable of Full HD to make sure you get the best viewing experience possible.
