I am looking to buy a HD TV – what should I be looking out for?
I am a complete amateur when it comes to HD and with so many of them out there, what specifications should be on my checklist when buying a HD TV?
Also, what does “20000: 1 dynamic contrast” and “30000:1 dynamic contrast” mean? Which is better and why? Thanks!
Forget about that contrast ratio business. No one uses the same scale so it’s nothing to compare against.
I would check the latest TV reviews in Consumer Reports. I think it was their November issue. They did a really good review on TVs.
What you need to consider most is size and type. By type I mean LCD or Plasma. Each brings pros and cons to the table.
LCDS:
More power efficient
Brighter picture for well lit rooms or rooms with lots of natural light
Doesn’t display dark scenes as well as plasma
Poorer viewing angle
Lighter
More fragile screen
More expensive then plasma
Plasmas:
Uses more power
Better for rooms less brightly lit rooms
Displays dark scenes better
Wide viewing angle
Heavier
More durable screen
Cheaper then LCD
Generates more waste heat.
So pick the type based on what features are more important to you, and the size, and then go shopping looking for what looks best to you for the price.
