What Can You Do With Logitech Revue Google TV
Only Google TV combines the TV you know and love with the power and freedom of the Internet. Finally, you can access and watch your favorite program content outside the network without switching the input, the device or even room.
When using Logitech Revue with Google TV for the first time, customers may automatically receive an over-the-air Google TV software update. As future updates become available, downloads can be accepted or declined upon system startup.
Simple Setup
What you need:
• HDTV with HDMI port
• Cable, satellite or telephone company box with HDMI out
• High-speed Internet access (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)
What you do:
1. Connect your cable or satellite box to Logitech Revue
2. Connect Logitech Revue to your HDTV
3. Access the Internet wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable
First things first I want to save time for those readers who have a dial-up or don’t have a cable box or if you have your PC connected to a tv and using it as a DVR or in a similar fashion, you can stop reading now, this thing is not for you. You either will not be able to use it as intended or you won’t gain anything that you already don’t or could have.
For the rest of you this might change how you watch your TV. Here is what became of my thinking about the Logitech revue. First of all I use Time Warner for my cable and have they highest speed internet (connected with logitech N610 wireless router). Just a basic HD cable box, no DVR. As far as DVR goes, there is info on a web that seems like only Dish network DVR’s are fully supported for now. I can’t confirm it, but if you are not with DISH and have a DVR you might want to check into that. Unit itself, very simple to set up it comes with everything that you need to start using it. The thing that I definitely like the most is keyboard. This is about the size of 14inch HP laptop keyboard with a similar feel to it and have a better measure tracking pad at the right size. So for left handed that might be a bit to get use to it. Just to let you know if you have Harmony One remote you can use it too to control Revue. It works but I personally stick to keyboard, it just a lot easier when it comes down to navigation. And yes android phone can control it too. But like with the harmony remote, navigation is the key, and keyboard is the one that works the best. Ok last things about hardware you will have to connect hdmi out of your cable box into Revue and again hdmi cable from it either straight into your TV or like I have my SONY receiver.
Now to the fun part. To describe what Logitech Google TV is: it’s like a simplified computer for you cable and internet. Since it has google chrome (for those who don’t know it’s a web browser similar to Firefox or IE) built in it’s kind of interesting to go online and read the news or watch a YouTube video on a 50 inch screen. Since it’s not like apple that doesn’t support flash fully, I didn’t have any issues with any website so far, everything works fine and smooth. But I can see how it will create frustration with dial-up since Revue much use of the Internet even when you’re not just using a browser, but let say use the TV guide or search for info about the movie or show. As another great feature is using a camera (which I think is way overpriced) but my family is overseas and they always complaining that they don’t see me enough. Works like skype in a simplified way. Both sides has to use the same software, it’s called Logitech VidHD. So my brother for example has a VidHD installed in his PC using HP camera, we can use video conference just like with the Skype. Probably most of you won’t use it, but if you have a family or friend overseas I do recommend it. I already start mentioning about the search feature, so the way it works, in a search field when you type in let say Gladiator movie it will look info about it in the web, your cable box(TV guide) and all your attached storage devises. I personally have ACER 2TB NAS (network attached storage). I have couple home videos shot in h.264 format and this thing has no problems playing it. So for those who wondering if it can play digital movies stored in your Hard Drive, it looks like it can and does it without a glitch. As far as APP’s goes I haven’t really tried much, but there is only few right now anyway, like twitter (I don’t have twitter account) so till there is some good apps out there it is nothing to comment. One thing HULU does Not work. It looks like it’s being blocked by a software. Maybe it will be fixed in the future, otherwise NETFLIX works just fine.
To say it in a simple way if you are looking something that will make it to find what are you want to watch or listen a lot easier and you watch a lot of online video plus have lots of content on your hard drive, this is the way to go. I really got used to it quickly instead of going thought the channels and looking what is good on tv, I can just type in what I want to see and it will bring it up on my big screen, no matter where the content is.
Sorry for a long review, but I could actually add a lot more, so if you have any specific questions just leave a comment and I will try to answer.
