My dad plans on getting a big screen TV. Is there any big difference in brand names and if its plasma or HD?
No doubt there are many many different brands out there. Generally the price one pays is the quality they are going to get.
Hence if you buy walmart junk, you will pay alot less, but it wont last longer than a year or 2.
If he wants to go with the Plasma technology I recommend Pioneer, Panasonic, and Hitachi. They make some of the most reliable, excellent pictures out there.
If you want to go to the LCD technology, Sony is the best. Sony has different levels of performance to fit your needs.
Here is a tip; Stay away from Samsung, Philips/Magnavox, and all walmart units including all off brands like Vizio, Maxcent, NEC, Tatung, etc
The reason I tell you this is because when the tv craps out after warranty; getting support from that company is inexistent. No Parts or Support.
Unlike Samsung generally the parts are available, but they are soo expensive that buying a new one is in the question.
Sony and the other brands I mentioned do not have this problem. Parts are very reliable.
