Who Are The Biggest TV Manufacturers?
When you set foot in an electronics store, you see more brands and models of TVs than you can possibly remember. The savvy TV shopper certainly considers the brand name when shopping for a new TV, whether it’s plasma, LCD, or LED. Some brands are known for top quality TVs, while others are bargain names. The big players in the marketplace, according to market share, are Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sharp, and Vizio.
Samsung, the top manufacturer of TVs sold in the U.S., has long been recognized for providing an ideal balance of quality and affordability. A part of the TV manufacturing industry since the early 1970s, today Samsung is the top producer of consumer electronics in the world. The Samsung line includes Plasma, DLP, and LCD TVs, as well as a wide array of other electronic devices. Samsung was one of the first companies to use LED backlighting and 3D technology, continuing the brand’s reputation for innovation.
Sony, founded in 1946, has only recently slipped to the second place when it comes to consumer electronics. Known for a lengthy history of cutting-edge TV designs, Sony’s product line includes Plasma and LCD models, typically at the higher end when it comes to both quality and price. Among the first brands to sell a 70” 1080p TV, Sony’s models often incorporate a slot for Sony memory sticks, enabling content display from a Sony digital camera or camcorder. The extensive line of Sony TVs is found in the Bravia product line. The XBR series is known for the most innovative technologies, including 3D functionality.
Founded in 1958, LG was once known for budget electronics on the low end of the quality scale. Since the 1990s, however, the company has become known as some of the most advanced LCD and Plasma TVs on the market. The first to produce both the 71” Plasma and 76” LCD TVs, they also make CRT rear projectors, as well as DLP front and rear projector TVs. Newer models include those with LED backlights or 3D technology. Its high-end models are found in the Infinia line. Known for top-notch quality, most LG products are available at a lower price than comparable models from Samsung and Sony.
Panasonic, long a leading name in the electronics industry, led the DTV and HDTV revolutions. Panasonic was among the first companies to sell HD TVs and models capable of displaying 3D technology, and is consistently ranked among the top companies for both quality and price. Best known for Plasma TVs, Panasonic also offers a full line of DLP, CRT, and LCD front and rear projection models. Panasonic’s Plasma TV line ranges from 42 to 65 inches in size; the company has also shown panels as large as 150 inches at industry shows, a glimpse at the future of Panasonic TVs.
Sharp, founded in 1912, focuses primarily on LCD technology, unlike the other companies on this list offering a wide array of TV types. Known for pioneering this technology, primarily in the Aqous line, Sharp has an unrivaled reputation for top-quality LCD televisions.
Vizio is a relative newcomer to the TV market, having been founded in 2002. In less than a decade, Vizio has quickly taken market share from established companies, and is now a leading manufacturer of LCD TVs. Known primarily for offering Plasma and LCD models at a low price point, some argue that Vizio TVs are lower quality than those by other leading brands. However, it’s also been said that Vizio offers an ideal balance of quality and price. The upcoming Pro-Series LCD TVs feature the newest technologies that Vizio has to offer.
