Explaining HD TV Picture Quality
The most important statistic to notice when evaluating HDTV picture quality is its resolution. It’s important to keep in mind that any HDTV will be a noticeable upgrade from standard TV, but when choosing a screen for your home cinema system, pay attention to resolution before other markers of picture quality. The first segment of resolution, the number, defines the amount of vertical lines of resolution. Typically, these numbers will be 480, 540, 720, or 1080. Increasing size means better picture resolution: 1080 TVs have 2 million pixels, nearly 5 times the resolution of standard TVs. After the number “i” or “p” denotes how the image is constructed from digital bits and bytes by the TV: “i” stands for interlaced and “p” for progressive scan – p generates better picture quality, especially when watching programmes with a lot of motion, e.g. football. 3D TV is entering the market now, with glasses required, and is integrated into already existing LCD TV technology.
After choosing the resolution for your Home Cinema System, and after making the choice between LCD and Plasma and then LCD TV DVD and LCD TV Blu-Ray DVD, the standard HD format, contrast ratio is the most important aspect of picture quality. TV manufacturers use different standards to measure contrast ratio, which makes comparing TVs of different brands difficult. LCD TVs suffer vs. plasmas because the liquid crystals in LCD TVs are backlit, always creating some light and making infinite contrast impossible (infinite contrast is achieved by plasmas and standard CRT TV’s), but the LCD TV makes up for this with its high brightness. The two measures are “dynamic” and “static” contrast ratios; static contrast ratios are usually better indicators of performance.
Black and white levels are another aspect of picture quality, and LCD TVs tend to have great white levels and poor black levels relative to plasma TVs. These levels can be adjusted but if tweaked too much will shorten the lifespan of a TV, and even the newest 3D TVs are not immune to this problem.
Next, colour temperature, saturation and accuracy are significant aspects of display quality. The standard for colour is equivalent to daylight- and the most “natural” colour temperature is 6500K. Viewing angles are another concern, especially with LCD TVs as the picture quality decreases dramatically as the viewer moves to more oblique angles. However, if your home cinema system is oriented directly in front of the LCD TV, there should be no problem at all in this regard. If your LCD TV has image artefacts, such as combing, lines, jagged edges, blurring, or some other type of digital noise, it is a problem with the TV and should be returned to the manufacturer for repair.
