While looking for a new TV, you may find that televisions are now referred to in many more letters that just the plain old TV. There are many types of TVs including LCD, Plasma, DLP and LED TVs. All the newer television sets are now digital ready without needing a converter box. Nowadays, you can find many different LCD and plasma TV for cheap, but if you want the latest technology, look into the LED televisions.
Plasma and LCD televisions use fluorescent tubes as lighting for the screens. Since these tubes are on whenever the TV is on, it is often difficult for them to show deep black colors that are needed for sharp pictures. At times this may be due to light leaks and at other times, it may be due to the limitation of fluorescent light. Fluorescent light limits the number of colors that will display through the screen. This is because of the quality of fluorescent light and not because of the liquid crystal diodes, which can show unlimited colors. That is the reason fluorescent lighting limits the colors shown on a TV set, while LED lighting can offer a better range of colors.
If you are buying a LED TV, you will want to understand the two different types of LED TVs. One is to have the light emitting diode lights along the edge of the TV screen and this is called an edgelit LED TV. The other way is to arrange them behind the screen and this is called a back lit LED TV. If you are concerned about energy consumption, both the edgelit and backlit LED technologies use less power than a fluorescent plasma or LCD screen. The edge lit LED TVs are cheaper and can also be extremely thin.
While looking for these televisions, you will find that edge lit televisions are both thinner and less expensive than the backlit TV sets. If the sharpest deep dark black colors are important to you, then you will want to choose the back lit LED TV set.
If you don’t look around, you can end up paying up to 50 to 100 percent higher for a LED backlit television compared to a similar feature and size LCD or plasma TV.
