How effective are HD DVD-up converters? They are a fraction of price of Blue Ray and other HD DVD players.?
1) I looked at one HD DVD-up player that converts regular DVDs to high definition while watching TV. It was made by Philips and only around $45. Do you have to have a HD TV for you to see the HD-quality images with the converter, or will you still see the HD-quality images with even a non-HD (standard, or regular) TV set?
2) Same question goes for Blue Ray and other HD DVD players. You would have to have an HD TV in the first place to see the HD-images, not a regular TV set, right?
3) Is it better to buy these HD DVD-up converters right now instead of HD DVD and Blue Ray players? I mean, HD DVDs are expensive, and most DVDs are not made with this technology. Are the HD DVD-up converters effective at getting HD-quality image on your TV by just inserting a regular DVD and converting it to high definition?

The reason why you want to upconvert is because the resolution of a dvd is lower than an HD tv’s resolution, so dvd’s don’t look as good on an hd tv as compared to a standard tv. The upconversion is basically making the picture look as good as possible on an HD tv, and in reality is making something out of nothing. So until you upgrade from standard dvd-if you own an hdtv-the best you can do in picture quality on a disc is to upconvert. If you have a non-hd tv, you would stick with a standard dvd player as that’s the best quality you will get on a non-hd tv, you can’t upconvert if you’re already at the best you can get right? Also, If you have a non-hd tv, you wouldn’t want to waste money buying an hd player because your tv wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the detail and quality of hd. Lastly in terms of an upconverted dvd image, it may technically be HD (at least your tv will say the signal is1080i or whatever), but for sure, it’s not an HD-quality image. In my experience an upconverted dvd does look better than standard dvd on my hdtv, however a true hd picture completely blows it away.
