There are so MANY problems and inaccuraccies in both your question and the other answers to your question, that I feel as though I have to respond to set the record straight. Here is the bottom line on each point you raise and some of the stuff others have said (incorrectly).
>i have a basic direct tv cable box<
First, if you have previously had a standard Directv receiver, you need to call Directv and get an installer to come out. You are going to need the slighly oblong looking antenna. The old standard def antenna can not see all the satelittes you need to see.
Secondly, just installing a HD receiver and the correct dish antenna STILL will not get you high def programming. You need to call Directv and order the high def programming.
Thridly, I fear you have made a large mistake buy going out and buying a model HR-10-250 on your own. Just connecting it does not mean it will receive ANY programming. It has to be authorized by Directv and they may or may not eer authorize this particular receiver. Additionally, the receiver you bought is only capable of receiving mpeg-2 broadcasts. Directv has been eliminating there mpeg-2 high def broadcasts. I am not sure where they are at in this process, but there may be be now, or in the future, absolutely no mpeg-2 high def broadcasts, making the receiver you bought about as useful as a brick.
Fourthly, the actual cable hook-up issue. I believe all the new dish antenna's are the SWM type. If that is the case, then there is only one coax running from the antenna to the receiver. However, I do not believe this old receiver works with the SWM antenna, thus you have another reason you should not have bought the receiver you bought.
In short, you should come her and ask these questions after you have already done this. The right time to have done this checking was BEFORE you bought this receiver.
I suspect I know what the person who sold you the receiver was trying to get rid of it!
