Can I still get surround sound with my receiver using “over-the-air” antenna signal?
My wife and I are planning for a baby and have dropped Cable TV entirely to shore up additional funds. My question is, can I still get Dolby (or other surround) surround sound through the Air antenna? I am getting HD signals but didn’t know if I would still be able to use my receiver for surround sound. I know I can use my receiver for sound, just didn’t know if a surround sound “signal” was sent with the broadcasts over the air…
My HDTV does have an optical out
I’ll try answering, but my answer may not be fully correct.
If the over-the-air transmission is Digital and if the program has DD 5.1 audio (i.e. a movie), Surround Sound could be decoded, but if the antenna is connected directly to the TV, audio will output only through the TV speakers. Now, if the TV has a Digital audio OUTPUT (HDMI or Optical connector), you could connect that to your 5.1 receiver (if you have one), then the 5.1 speakers will give you surround sound.
If you have an HD Cable box or HD Satellite receiver, then they will have an Optical output for the 5.1 amp.
