Cathode ray tube displays are headed towards extinction, plasma and LCD are the technology of choice for high definition displays. LCD or Liquid Crystal Display technology uses liquid crystals to generate an image. Plasma displays use ionized gas (plasma) to produce a picture. All displays have minute picture elements called pixels, the activation of the pixels produce picture.
There are further variants of LCD technology, there are Twisted Nematic (TN) panels, vertical and horizontal In Plane Switching (IPS) panels. The cheapest LCD technology is Twisted Nematic, it is fast but lacks in terms of color accuracy and viewing angles. IPS panels have better viewing angles and much better color reproduction.
Unlike LCD’s, plasma displays don’t suffer from viewing angle problems, they are also more color accurate and produce better contrast. If you are looking for flat screen bargains choose an LCD as the technology is mature and reliable.
Some LCD TV’s are marketed as LED; well, they are actually LCD TV’s that employ LED’s for backlight unlike older LCD’s that use fluorescent lamps. To get the best flat screen bargains choose LCD TV’s for screen sizes 42 inches or lower.
For screen sizes above 46 inches plasma is probably your best choice since LCD’s that big are rare and prohibitively expensive. If you want an even larger screen, it is more economical to buy a video projector. Before you decide on a model don’t forget to ensure that all your current audio and video devices are compatible with your TV.
