My 32″ TV always shows a stretched picture unless in 4:3 mode, when it cuts off the sides. What can I do?
My parents recently bought a 32″ Emerson LCD HDTV and they have dish network. I noticed that when the TV display is in “normal” mode, everything looks stretched sideways.
I played with the different 5 settings: Normal, 4:3, Movie Expand, Wide, and Zoom. All of them (except 4:3) appear to be a stretched out version of standard, with incorrect proportion. When I put it on 4:3 setting, the proportion looks great and normal, but it cuts off the sides.
I know that the station is broadcasting in HD widescreen because they put the logos on the sides. Here are a couple of pictures of what I’m talking about.

How can I make it so that the whole true-proportioned widescreen picture comes through on the screen, rather than a cropped or stretched version? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi Eggy, I am sorry you are having a problem with your picture on your new TV. What you are describing sounds normal for an HD TV displaying a SD picture. Do you have a HD Dish Network receiver? Are there component cables or HDMI cable going from the receiver to the TV? All of these can cause the picture to display in SD not HD. If you have an HD (VIP) receiver, you can use your remote and press “Menu” 6 (System Set-up), 7 (HDTV Set-up). make sure that the setting for the TV Type matches your TV and Aspect Ratio should be 16X9.
