What You Should Know About 3D TVs…
3D TV is the kind of TV set that produces a television picture in a three dimensional image. So if you are viewing a sci-fi movie on TV and all of a sudden the villain throws a bomb at the hero. When the bomb blasts you will see the debris and the small rock particles come flying out of the screen towards you. You may even duck your head in haste but that’s all part of the experience of a 3D TV. Ultimately 3D television is the future of entertainment which submerses you into the live action of what you’re seeing on screen rather than just watching it.
At cinemas 3D projections have been in used since the early days of cinema at the star of the 19th century. It started with stereoscope that could take 3D photos to Kinematoscope which projected the first 3D movie production in 1922. Recent advances in technology have given us LCD, LED Plasma Television and HDTV resulting in our homes being adorned with screens up to 65 inches. Some people use video projectors which produce images that are virtually as large as the size of an entire wall in your home, a few centimetres thick with unbelievable picture clarity.
What will be next? What will the TV manufacturers invent once we all have 3D TVs? One possibility is 3D TVs where the characters in movies and games will virtually run about in your living room! The 3D pictures in a film are achieved by using a number of different technologies which will be detailed below.
An Anaglyph image which consists of the image being made of two layers in two different colours of cyan and red which are superimposed, one on another but very slightly offset to give the necessary depth. Some 3D glasses are bi-coloured resulting in the human eye seeing one colour in each eye. The brain constructs these two images into a realistic 3D image.
The Polarization method on the other hand refers to the oscillation orientations of certain waves reflecting their specific directions of vibrations and propagation. Examples of such waves are acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves. This technique is frequently used in 3D cinemas, and it often used by 3D TVs.
An alternative method is Alternate Frame Sequencing where the Television program is filmed with 3D films or more than one camera. Subsequently these images are supperimposed on a single film in an alternate eye order. So the right and left eye pictures are shown one after the other and the film runs at twice the normal frame-per-second. As a rule, they operate at 48 frames per second rather than the normal 24 frames per second.
On 3D TVs that use super LCD shuttered glasses they have radio receivers in the glasses which receive instruction and the glasses open and close the eye lenses in rapid succession in synch to the image on screen.
There are currently many suppliers of 3D TVs including Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Philips, LG, and Sony. One of the largest ranges that is available is from Samsung.
