Poor Year For 3D Television Growth
The 3D revolution isn’t setting the world on fire the way that was originally expected. New research shows that 3D growth has been disappointing to date despite overall global TV shipments having grown sharply over the last 12 months. Last years figures of 247 million units being shipped is up 17 per cent from 2009. Despite the difficulties of the global economy, this is the best growth since the start of the flat panel TV transition.
Many expected 3dTVs to add another dimension to the TV market but its LCD TVs that continue to dominate. At least half of TV shipments worldwide accounted to LCD TVs and shipments are expected to rise from 190 million in 2010 to 215 million in 2011. Last year, Japan was the key market for LCD growth with shipments forecasted at 22.6 million; this was an increase of 80% from 2009 due to a stimulus programme. However, 2011 will see the end of the programme which could prompt a fall in shipments. Europe also experienced good growth, however, analysts expect sales to slip in the coming years.
The popularity of LED backlights was the main aspect in the LCD trend of 2010. Attractive pricing is expected to lead to an increase of 20% over the course of 2011. LEDs are expected to account for a majority of LCD shipments in 2011 as manufacturers push towards a transition away from fluorescent backlights. Plasma TVs also enjoyed successful year as consumers look for fair prices with Plasmas encountering a price decline. In 2010, shipments in plasmas increased by 28% from the previous year with 18 million units being sold. This well-rounded growth in the TV market is why the relative failure of 3D sales came as such a shock. Electrical items in general seem to be enjoying growth worldwide such as fridges, washing machines and upright vacuum cleaners .
