3D is nothing new, movie goers in the 1950s enjoyed scenes and characters leaping off the screen right at them. This kind of movie faded in and out of style over the decades, but new technology is taking the 3D movie off the big screen and bringing it to a television set near you. Video games are taken to a whole new level with 3D introduced. You’ll be able to jump right into the game with the scenery and characters surrounding you as you play. As you battle the deadly zombies or jump high on the rooftops on a skateboard, you’ll be alongside your character as if you were truly in the game.
Watching one of your favorite films can now spill right out into your living room, immersing you in the scenes and the story. Unlike with older 3D glasses of blue and red, where things seem discolored, the new 3D glasses are liquid-crystal lenses that are in sync with the TV through an infrared system. Bringing you clearer images and high quality color as you are surrounded by the scenes on screen with your 3D DVDs.
Some of the TVs will convert 2D programs to 3D, so you can basically watch everything in 3D. But the technology is still in its infancy stage and may take another generation or two in order to be as good as made-for-screen 3D. Demos are around that show this process and although reported to work fine, they could stand for some improvement to truly live up to 3D standards.
2D will not be forgotten though so no need to worry that only 3D is viewed on these new TVs. The 3D televisions will also offer 2D in the same quality as a standard 2D television. This is convenient for when the batteries on the glasses run low or run out or when there is a health condition that restricts 3D viewing.
Like with anything new, there are some warnings that come with this new technology. This warns that children and teenagers can be susceptible to issues connected to viewing 3D. It also warns that pregnant women, the elderly with health conditions, and anyone overly tired should avoid 3D altogether. The warning doesn’t stop there though, it advises against drinking alcohol and watching TV also. Not a good thing for those who enjoy sports and beer at the same time.
Before deciding on whether you are ready for the new 3D TVs, you have to look at what you can expect and if it fits in with your lifestyle. The advantages of immersing yourself in the storyline of movies and games are very attractive. The disadvantages with health and age issues can be a drawback. Weighing the pros and cons will let you know if now is the time for a 3D entertainment system in your home.
